f not, why not? In their bestselling book Younger Next Year, guess what authors Crowley and
Lodge identify as the best way to start reversing the deleterious effects of aging and to actually
feel younger next year than you do now? That’s right, making a serious commitment to
EXERCISE. Sitting is now recognized as the “new smoking” because of the catastrophic effects
that the lack of movement is having on our health. Exercise is well known to result in the
production of significant amounts of anti-inflammatory proteins and therefore plays a key role
in the prevention and management of any disease or condition with an inflammatory link –
heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, dental caries, and periodontal
disease to name a few.
The bare minimum amount recommended for health maintenance is 150 minutes per week of
moderate intensity aerobic exercise combined with 2 sessions per week of strength training. A
general guideline for what “moderate” is, is any activity during which you can carry on a
conversation but that causes you to breath too hard to be able to sing. Depending on your
lifestyle, or the lifestyle you aspire to, doubling this and advancing into more strenuous exercise
can provide significant additional benefits.
